What to Expect at CO₂NNECT 2024: The Intersection of Carbon Management & Community Engagement

What to Expect at CO₂NNECT 2024: The Intersection of Carbon Management & Community Engagement

As the US moves toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, carbon management is playing a crucial role alongside other clean energy solutions. Technologies like carbon capture, direct air capture, and CO2 storage are essential to reducing emissions, but the success of these projects depends on how they impact and involve local communities. CO2NNECT 2024 aims to bring together diverse voices from industry, government, Tribal nations, labor, environmental justice organizations, and nonprofits to explore how carbon management can support communities while achieving decarbonization goals.

What is CO2NNECT 2024?

CO2NNECT is an annual conference hosted by the Carbon Action Alliance that focuses on building connections across sectors involved in carbon management. The event emphasizes responsible, community and worker-centered projects that contribute to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions. This year, CO2NNECT 2024 will be held from September 29 to October 1 at Keystone Resort Lodge near Denver, Colorado.

The event provides a platform for attendees from all backgrounds to engage in discussions on the challenges and opportunities that carbon management presents. Policymakers, industry experts, and community and environmental advocates will have the chance to exchange ideas and work toward solutions that prioritize community well-being.

Keynote Speakers and Event Highlights

Brad Crabtree, assistant secretary for Fossil Energy and Carbon Management at the US Department of Energy, will keynote the event. As a leading figure in carbon management, the assistant secretary will share insights on the latest developments in technologies and their integration in the US energy policy landscape.

Dr. David B. Spence, a renowned expert on energy and environmental law, will open the conference by discussing his book Climate of Contempt, which explores the growing political divide in climate policy and its implications for addressing climate change.

The event features an exciting lineup of additional expert speakers—visit our website to explore the full list.

New Tools for Communities

The Great Plains Institute will introduce its Colorado Decision Support Tool for Carbon Management, which helps communities and decision-makers evaluate the social, environmental, and economic factors involved in siting projects. By offering real-time data, it empowers communities to play a central role in these projects.

The tool is modeled after the Louisiana version introduced at last year’s conference and is designed to ensure that carbon management projects are developed responsibly, with local values in mind.

Looking Back at CO2NNECT 2023

Last year’s CO2NNECT, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, brought together over 140 participants from various sectors and geographies. The event emphasized the importance of thoughtful engagement in the energy transition, particularly for communities that have been historically impacted by pollution and industrial development.

One standout session showcased CapturePoint Solutions, a carbon management developer in Louisiana, who partnered with a local labor union and school district to create a program training high school students for energy jobs. This initiative not only supported workforce development but also demonstrated the potential economic benefits of carbon projects for local communities.

Why Attend CO2NNECT 2024?

CO2NNECT 2024 offers a unique opportunity to engage with experts and community leaders on the future of carbon management. Attendees will participate in panel discussions, networking sessions, and workshops that explore the role of carbon management in decarbonization and the broader social and economic impacts of these technologies.

At the Carbon Action Alliance, we believe that successful climate action requires transparent, accessible information and a commitment to engaging with communities. CO2NNECT is a public forum where different voices can come together to discuss how carbon projects can be deployed responsibly and equitably.
